William
We miss you William, and think about you every day.
You were so many things to us...
A lover, as you sat close to us and purred and gazed up
at us while we scratched your head and chin and ears;
A prince, as we picked you up and put you on the bed or
sofa with us because you were never into that whole
"jumping" thing;
A handsome boy, with a coat that garnered the compliments
of every one that pet you;
A mystery, with your one black eye that puzzled every
vet;
A squawky cat, who always let us know just what he wanted
(and it was usually Doritos or chicken);
A prankster, who liked to knock things off of the coffee
table for no good reason;
A bad influence, as you made sleeping until noon and
taking hours long naps way too easy by snuggling up against
us;
A fighter, as you growled (I never knew cats could do
that until I met you) and hissed and puffed up your body
through every vet visit, even at the end when you were sick;
A hunter - no toy mouse (or the occasional real bug) was
safe if you set your sights on it;
An adventurer - you may not have been able to jump, but
you loved to give us a heart attack with your daredevil
climbing around the living room;
A crank, when you were picked up or moved against your
will or someone dared to try and constrain you;
An irony, the cat of a book editor who set out to destroy
every hardcover book jacket in the house; and
A time capsule cat - you were with daddy from his very
first days in New York, there through lots of apartments,
some great times and some hard times, and a lot of growing
up, there on the night that I came home with him and met you
for the very first time and there when we came home from our
wedding and I was officially your mom, for which I am so
grateful.
You were invaluable.
Some called you Prince William or Sir William, and when
you were naughty you were sometimes William Kenneth Thomas
III, but mostly you were just Willy, our little Willikins.
We miss you, buddy.
